Mousetrap Vehicle
Project type
Design Challenge
Date
February 2023
Location
Durham
For this project, my team and I designed a mousetrap-powered vehicle to travel across a sand-filled track. The goal was to maximize performance by optimizing weight, traction, and distance traveled. We used a foam core base for low weight, 3D-printed wheels for stability, and added pipe cleaners for traction in sand. A lever arm and string system transferred the mousetrap’s stored energy to the axle, converting potential energy into forward motion.
We applied structured design methods including mind mapping, decomposition charts, and scoring matrices to evaluate concepts and guide decisions. Key challenges included axle friction, traction loss, and stability of the lever arm. Through testing and iteration, we identified improvements such as reducing weight and refining wheel mounts.
